PRINCE CHARMING DANCES ONEGIN

FRIEDEMANN VOGEL IN TAIWAN THIS WEEKEND

FRIEDEMANN VOGEL IN TAIWAN THIS WEEKEND

PRINCE CHARMING DANCES ONEGIN

Now into its 11th year, the International Ballet Star Gala invites international ballet stars every year to perform, and this year, we have invited the principal dancer of Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet, Friedemann Vogel, who has the image of "Prince Charming", and the star of the Russian Bolshoi Ballet, Evgenia Obraztsova (Evgenia Obraztsova); These two principal dancers will perform the pas de deux from the dance drama “Onegin”.

First time partnering the Bolshoi Ballet star

"For these two top international dancers, this partnership is an important collaboration in their dance careers" said Wang Zexin, organizer and artistic director of 《黑潮藝術》Art Wave. "This Mirror Pas de Deux is an important segment in the work. It is a big challenge to see the male dancer lift the female dancer, toss her, then speedily lower her to turn her around on the ground, and so on, all the while maintaining an elegance in form, in a series of fluent movements.

Wang Ze Xin said that Friedemann Vogel is an international ballet super star, "at the height 190 cm, plus a certain aristocratic temperament, he always dances the romantic lead; ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Onegin’, ‘Swan Lake’ are all amongst  his masterpieces. His overall image/personality is like a Prince Charming who has stepped off the pages of a manga.”

Amazing skill to dance the pas de deux

Friedemann Vogel, 38, has been dancing with his 13-year older brother since he was a child; he started training formally from the age of nine, and since then, has been inseparable from dance. Add to that, his outstanding technique and handsome appearance, Friedemann has been the pride and joy of Stuttgart Ballet, a frequent guest dancer around the world, often performing with different dance partners.

"International Ballet Star Gala" is Wang Zexin’s effort to invigorate the Taiwanese ballet scene. Since 2007, she has continued organizing this event every year, inviting a number of international ballet dancers to Taiwan to perform. Now into 11 years, the Gala has showcased more and more top ballet stars, as well as present a number of new works. Its growing reputation has also attracted hardcore ballet fans from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong etc to Taiwan to enjoy the performances.

It is worth mentioning that the British choreographer David Dawson's new ballet "White Swan" will have its Asian premiere at the Gala. Wang Ze Xin said, "This work to break the audience perception of the classical White Swan ballet; although there is the same use of Tchaikovsky’s music, the male and female leads will not embody the elaborate classical ballet form; instead you will see the characteristically clean lines of contemporary dance.

From classical to contemporary

Wang Ze Xin said that this year's programme ranges from the classics to the contemporary, showcasing a total of more than 20 styles of diverse dance styles.

Mosaic by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui feat. Anne Souder & Lloyd Mayor ©Hibbard Nash Photography.jpg

World Premiere on 15 February of Mosaic by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui for the Martha Graham Company at the Joyce Theater in New York!

Influenced by sufi mysticism, Mosaic is the multi-award winning Flemish-Moroccan's attempt to piece together, juxtapose, and at the same time, uncover the different facets and paradoxes of the Middle East.

"I was interested in the concept of mosaic because it's all these little stones that you put next to each other, and all of a sudden they come together and create a bigger shape," Cherkaoui says. "So for me there was something about connecting the abstract with the reality of today – especially everything that's happening politically. It's very important to remember how diversity creates identity."

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui choreographed for Beyoncé's jaw dropping performance at the 2017 Grammys Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday 12 February

"If we're going to heal, let it be glorious,” Queen B quoted from her song “Sandcastles.” And glorious it was.

The singer is pregnant with twins, and thus there was no acrobatic entrance, no frenetic dancing. But there was still a show-stopping moment with a gravity-defying chair, and beautiful, lyrical choreography, choreographed by the multiple award-winning Flemish-Moroccan dance artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Beyonce donned a gorgeous gold costume and a halo evoking the Virgin Mary and various goddess iconography, and relied on projected images accompanied by pre-taped voiceover to deliver an opening speech about healing and motherhood.
